Conceptual Activities

Conceptual Activities: 

  • Conceptual activities are designed to give the student opportunities to understand and use the target words in an activity related to the unit theme.
  • During the conceptual extension activity, the teacher should expand on students’ language and vocabulary in a natural, but purposeful way.
  • Example of a conceptual activities are:
    • Arts and Crafts: for example, for a Weather unit create a weather scene
    • Science Experiments: for example for an Ocean unit compare salt water and tap.
    • Role Playing: for example, for Dental Health role play dentist and patient

Strategies for Successful Extension Activities:

  • Use strategies for conversation
    • Open-ended questions or “tell me” statements
    • Contributions
    • Acknowledgements
    • Recasts
    • Expansions
  • Encourage and/or reinforce student use of target words.
