Creating Daily Lesson Plans

Lesson plans should contain enough detail for teachers to comfortably implement the vocabulary instruction smoothly. Some helpful suggestions:

  • Lessons should be about 15-20 minutes in duration.
  • Each lesson should include two of the four intervention components (Fast Mapping, Interactive Book Reading, Conversation, Extension Activities). We suggest the following frequency of each component per unit, with a typical unit lasting eight sessions:
    • Two Fast Mapping activities (one at the start of the unit and one in the middle)
    • Six book reading activities
      • Book walk for each book: expository and narrative (2)
      • Interactive book reading: Expository book (2)
      • Interactive book reading: Narrative book (2)
    • Three conversations
    • Four extension Activities:
      • Two drill and practice activities
      • Two conceptual activities

The "Unit and Lesson Plan Templates" page contains an overview of a vocabulary unit showing how intervention components are distributed.
